Teacher and Student, A Little More Than Just Friends

As I have begun to read my next novel, Teach Me by R.A Nelson, a lot of thoughts have flown through my mind. The novel's protagonist Nina is a high school senior who is very mature for her age and is bored with her small towns boring everyday life. Nina is intelligent beyond her means and nothing seems to challenge her. That is until the new language arts teacher, Mr. Mann comes along. Mr. Mann and Nina end up in a twisted and risky relationship that could ruin both of their names and reputation among the small conservative Alabama town. As I continue to read, I am and have been hooked since the very first page. Even though Nina is already eighteen, it is still taboo that she is in a secret relationship with her teacher. Should students be allowed to be involved with teachers despite they are of legal age? When and where do professional ethics come into play and how much is too much between both teacher and their student?

After reading your blog post, this novel seems really interesting! I think it's a little bit funny how girls mature faster than boys do and tend to find older men attractive according to certain studies and stories I've heard about because of the sense of security and they can relate to them easier. However, although that may be true for most girls, and Nina is of age, being legally considered as an adult, I don't believe that students should be involved in relationships with their teachers. I'm not sure how old Mr. Mann is but I think that when teenagers are in relationships with older adults, to me personally, it's a little awkward and disturbing because their mentalities and goals are completely different despite the fact that Nina may be incredibly mature for her age. Furthermore, Nina has not experienced as much of life as Mr. Mann has, which leaves him with an image that may seem as though he is taking advantage of the student. I know that at Los Osos High School, teachers and staff are not able to accept friend requests from their students until after graduation, and find that to be a very good idea because technology allows people to sneak by society without others really knowing much about their personal life if they don't post anything about it online. However, I believe that it is good for teachers to get to know their students on a personal level after graduation or so long as the conversations don't get too personal as if instigating relationships. Teach Me seems like an interesting read! I hope you enjoy it!

  2. That souds like a very interesting book and from reading your blog post, I am very intrigued to read it. It seems like very risky territory the girl and her teacher are in, and I think at any time a teacher and student shouldn't be involved romantically because it will most likely end in trouble. I really look look forward to reading this book, you've made me very interested!

  3. This seems to be like a very entertaining book! You have definitely made me interested in reading it! It is sometimes hard to believe that some students can even consider having that intimate relationship with teachers, isn't it?

  4. This sort of situation where teachers are now in relationships with students seem strange, but sadly are becoming more and more common nowadays. Before it was frowned upon and now it just seems like a normal everyday situation. Teachers at all schools should all have that policy where they can't add their students on Facebook or exchange numbers for any reason. This whole situation is so weird because in the long run, what would they tell their children about how they met.

  5. It is taboo to have a student and teacher relationship. However, i feel it is ok to have such a relationship. co-workers meet at work and form relationships there. why can't students meet their teachers in shcool and start relationships there? of course age requirements must be kept in mind, but overal, it should be allowed. Love is Love. No matter where you meet.

  6. Hahaha this book seems interesting, but also one of those books that you just cant put down. In my opinion I dont think its is appropriate no matter your legal age to be haveing a teacher student relation, it just seems unprofessional and very very strange.

  7. I agree with a lot of your views. It is strange to me to have a relationship with a teacher even legally, such as Nina does, but I understand how it could maybe come to be. I agree with Carleen that teachers and student are in very different places in their lives and that is most of the reason why it is so ethically disapproved. Also, yes I am hooked! Can't wait to see how the story all comes together and the fate of Nina and Mr. Mann's relationship.

PS. In the story, Mr. Mann is 25. If that makes any difference.
